I am now a new mom! :P

It’s been such a long time not writing at all.. why? not sure if it was all the adrenaline of becoming a mother and that my energy was all in one place: growing a healthy little human! Eating all the healthy food I could, going on walks, relaxing, putting my feet up, and all the good things your friends and family tell you to do, I did it all! and it was worthy.

Having said that, I was fully focused on taking care of myself while I was pregnant. And in May 2020, during the lockdown in Dublin, I gave birth to a healthy little boy that’s going to be 10 months old in a week. uff!

Time really flies when you’re looking at your children growing up

Now, the whole process of the pregnancy was very very pleasant. I did suffer from all the known symptoms a pregnant woman can have, but I don’t complain. I think at this stage I have forgotten all of the negative points. However, being pregnant during a pandemic is tuff work. Starting with the awful fact that you don’t get to have our significant one to your side on the medical checks, or at the hospital once you give birth. Not to mention how difficult it was as a first-time mum to go and shop online. I didn’t know anything about sizes, things you need, and things you don’t.. to say the less I ended up buying stuff we barely used, and buying last-minute essential items as I was oblivious to the fact we will use some things (novice issues).

Being a mom has changed my life and vision dramatically.. and I mean it. I can’t describe it perfectly, but I know that my life is totally different in so many ways. Positive and negative things but I will try to focus all the time on the positive things so I have enough strength to keep going.

So far, maternity has been so good that I really really want to do it once more 🙂

My little baby at 9 months old..

I have my long list of the things that you’ve never been told by other mums, but I’ll leave it for a new post.. in the meantime: have a positive and happy day!

A short story to be in context…

Because I’ve been living in Ireland for more than 3 years, I think I should start posting in English now…

Lots of things have happened since I came here. Many of them are positive and a few negatives. I finished 2 courses in general English and I’m pretty sure they’ve helped me to improve the way I communicate and express myself. However, I still have my slips sometimes, especially because at home I speak Spanish 100% of the time. I have a Nicaraguan boyfriend so I can’t avoid it.

Following the completion of the two English courses, I got a job in my area. Yes, no more non-qualified jobs! (yay! I guess). To be honest, I miss a lot working as a waitress or as a deli assistant. It’s the hardest thing I’ve done in my entire life because of the exhaustion (just terrible, physically speaking). The good side of it is that at the end of your shift, you get to forget about everything, flush away any issue at work and go home with a huge smile to get some rest. The rest is all you need to feel better. Little did I know when I was praying day and night to get my dream job in a big company, with a nice salary and all that stuff. When you have what I call “a real job” you can never disconnect from work-related issues, stupid arguments, discrimination feelings, harassment, and so on. Nothing to be scared about, but that’s how it’s been for me.

So, let’s talk about my qualified, critical skills, flashy job. I am a manager, or I was? Well, I got the opportunity, sponsored by the company. This is something that is not easy to get, so it’s one of my biggest achievements living abroad.

I think I won’t ever forget that there were two people that supported me, believed in me. Of course, I came with lots of experience in different industries. I owe my former managers a huge thank you for bringing me on-board and have given me the opportunity to experience the work-life in Ireland. I’ll be grateful to them always, no matter what.

Working life in a business environment is not so different from the one I’ve experienced in Mexico, there are the upsides and downsides.

The company I work for is a multinational brand (worldwide), franchised all over the globe, it has a culture of a startup but still sticking to square corporative rules. What does that mean to me? “Small town, big hell” or whatever “Pueblo chico, inferno grande” translates better in English. I was never afraid of startup culture. The idea of learning something or do more than I was supposed to be doing sounds good to me, because I like challenges and because I love to learn things that I don’t know about.

Unfortunately, I found out that the working culture is more about who does less, rather than who does best. Few people will actually care for things to be done the right way and proactively participates to generate a nice synergy within the team. I’m not talking about nationalities here, which is most commonly blamed for. I’m talking about the working culture overall.

European/International work culture, the way I have experienced (through these 2 years I’ve been working) is more about “Who is responsible for doing something – that isn’t me”, “Who can I blame if things go wrong”, “How can I do less and get paid more”, and the like. Unfortunately, that never matched my heroine spirit and my irrational need to be valued, recognised and praised for being one of the best in my areas of expertise. Which means, I was always trying to show how professional and highly skilled I was in order to get recognition and be valued. Rarely got that feeling.

Embracing my Mexican spirit I started working with the best energy, giving always that extra mile, supporting everyone, helping everyone, learning from everybody. That wasn’t necessary. Apparently, there’s no need for you to do more than your job spec is telling you to, and there’s also no need to make a huge effort as that won’t be reflected on your wages anyway.

I’m 100% sure there are people who knows the value of a colleague, who recognises people is good. But there are others that will actually take it the wrong way: they’ll take advantage, make jokes about your work, challenge your skills, doubt about your experience, or simply dismiss you. And this, my friends, is what I’ve seen as the most common way to behave.

I’ll write a bit more in a new post.. so you don’t get too scared. Please keep in mind that there are good things as well, not everything is negative.

What?! Nobody told me this!

So, motherhood has been a great journey so far filled with love, cuddles, smiles, more love, challenges, hospital visits, tears and cry (seriously a lot of crying), did I say lots of love? But first of all it has been a time where I have learn lots about how to care for a little human, how to care for myself and how to don’t care for things when they go utterly wrong.

When I first share the news about me being pregnant, it was all joy and jubilee for the family. I mean: me, the travel auntie, the black sheep who left hometown to live abroad, the crazy one, the reckless one, it was me having a baby. Me, that I’ve always said I wouldn’t have kids because they were so demanding. My family and friends went into the hype of happiness. The common thing to hear back then was: “Becoming a mother is the biggest, greatest of the blessings, in the world, in the whole universe”… Well, it is, but it’s also one of the scariest things you happen to ever live.

During all pregnancy, I was continuously wondering when the mom-to-be status was going to start feeling a blessing and a marvelous thing. I did suffer from all the ugly symptoms you can suffer while pregnant. All the nasty pains, I had them all: Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction, Carpal Tunnel, Sciatica, back pain, nausea, tiredness, joint pain, cramps. The whole 3 trimesters of my pregnancy went by with at least one of the not wanted illnesses associated with gravity status. As I’m always saying, I won’t complain at all, the pain didn’t stop me from enjoying the journey and at times I was kind of getting used to it.

My point all the time is: why do moms never speak about this?? why did no one ever prevent me that I will have this or that ache and it was going to be annoying to some extent? To make it worse, if I ask around, every single woman will tell you “Oh no, my pregnancy was amazing, didn’t suffer at all”, so I ended thinking “WTF is wrong with me then? Is it my age, is it fate, am I the 1 every 10,000 cases”…

Any time I visited my GP and talk through the list of things I was suffering from, he would go “oh yes, it will all disappear when you give birth”, “that’s not common but few women suffer from it, give it time and lots of rest”. The good news all the time was that regardless of the pains, my baby boy was growing healthy and strong. Yep, that was all I cared for.

One thing that’s real is that when you see the journey retrospectively, you absolutely think it was “grand” and tend to forget the downs and focus more on the ups. Nothing wrong with that, but I want to encourage the people reading this post to share with others how the parenthood experience develops, while it’s actually happening.

😛 jaja
  4. Cash -back.

RoadTrip: Ring of Kerry
